We sat down with a few people and some of our staff to talk about hobbies. We then found out that some of our staff likes to read before bedtime while some just simply tuck it in. With that in mind, we decided to make a list of best free book apps for Android. By the way, we also included an app that teaches kids how to read. It’s a free reading app for kids. So without further ado, let’s jump right into it.
Best Free Book Reading Apps for Android
Sure, the free books are not the latest ones but there are some indie gems and of course, classical masterpieces included. The free book apps not only save you cash but also introduce you to new amazing authors who never landed a publishing deal.
1. Wattpad ? Where stories live – Wattpad.com
While Wattpad is a serviceable eBook reader, the free book collection it provides is amazing. We’ve been using the app when we wrote the eBook reader article and have absolutely loved the concept and execution of the app. The interface is clean and the books they provide meet certain quality criteria. There are millions of stories written and published as well by amateur authors. The only problem we have is that some screens tend to get over saturated with information and the never-ending ads after every chapter. Features:
Popular genres are there and so are niche ones. You can share what you read with your family and friends. You can leave comments and give feedback directly to the author.
Notable Feature: The best part about this app is that you can write and upload your own personal stories/novels. This is an amazing way to expose your work to rampant criticism and try to improve.
2. Moon+ Reader by Moon+
Moon Reader+ has the best interface on the whole list. The app looks great on smartphones but really shines on tablets. However, landscape orientation might not be ideal for reading but it really helps while you are choosing what to read. The app comes with thousands of free books belonging to various genres. Its selection is vibrant and vast so you don’t have to worry about running out of interesting books anytime soon. Features:
10 themes are available to curb visual monotony. The books are in popular formats. The books are shown with covers and synopsis to ease selection.
Notable Feature: Moon Reader+ is actually an amazing eBook reader as well. While you can get books from the app itself, it potentially can display books which you download from other apps on the list as well.
Moon+ Reader Pro
The paid version of the app removes those mischievous ads. It also brings in a lot of features which facilitate your reading experience. There is no much added in terms of free available books though.
3. Free Books – Read & Listen by Digital Press Publishing s.r.o.
Are you in love with classics? Then this is the app made just for you. “Free Books” comes with tons of classic book selection which are available for download. Read right off the bat. Many apps on the Google Play Store lure users with promises of “free books” but in the end want you to pay for them. Thankfully this is not one of those clever ruse apps. The reader included in the app is an average one but the books are in popular PDF format. The In-app purchase, which is one time only, by the way, allows you to listen to audio books as well. Features:
From Shakespeare to Austen all are there. The search feature works like a charm. The app comes with original covers not the first Google image of the name.
Notable Feature: The most noticeable feature of this free book app for Android is its comprehensiveness. Sure, many classical authors are featured but it is also easy to find works of less famous writers as well.
4. 50000 Free eBooks & Free AudioBooks by Oodles
Despite having the name of “50000 Free eBooks,” we’re not actually sure whether the app has 50000 books or not. Although this app has a lot of book selection, even if you read a book every day, it will take you years before you can completely read all the books in their library. The interface is nothing to write home about but it gets the job done. The books do come with covers, but some of them are not original US ones. Tap on a book and it will give access to a small summary and the download option. Features:
Books are arranged in neat categories.Check all the books by one author with ease. The search feature is great.
Notable Feature: The app comes with a curl page animation. While this is not a big deal for many, it does add to the “realness” of the book for us.
5. Inkitt – Free Fiction Books, Novels & Stories by Free Novels Inc
Inkitt is not as popular as the first 4 apps that we mentioned. However, it is slowly gaining popularity due to its wide selection of free fiction books, novels & stories. Every book listed that’s accessible by this app is 100 percent free. In terms of user experience, the app comes with a decent design and user-friendly interfaces. It’s easy to use and navigate. With Inkitt, you can customize background colors and fonts to your preference while reading, enable auto scroll, read offline, and even write your own story with their Inkitt Writing: Tell The Story app. Feature:
Comes with a wide selection of free books.Read online and offline.User-friendly interfaces.
Notable Feature: The app offers a way for you to include your story in their library. However, you have to download a separate app for it.
